Best Nightly Skin Routine for Aging Skin

Best Nightly Skin Routine for Aging Skin
You should never go to bed without washing your face, but is there anything else you should be doing? If you want to extend or regain the look of youthful skin, you should be doing more than just giving your face a quick rinse. But what exactly should you do? Should you use your AM moisturizer at night too? Should you exfoliate and cleanse every night? Nightly skin care routines aren't as cut and dry as a morning routine when there is a particular order to do things daily, so use these tips to create a night time skin care routine to protect and rejuvenate your skin.

Cleanser

Always start your night time skin care regimen with a good cleanser such as SkinMedica Facial Cleanser or EltaMD Facial Cleanser to ensure you are removing all of the makeup and buildup from that day, and not just what's sitting on the surface. If you don't use a good facial cleanser at night, the makeup will just add to the build up on your skin, clog your pores, can cause your skin to age faster. If you choose to use a cleansing brush, ensure it is gentle and doesn't counteract your beauty regimen by irritating your skin.

If you have sensitive skin, you may want to avoid a brush and stick to cleansers made for your skin. Both NEOCUTIS Neo-Cleanse and SkinMedica Sensitive Skin Cleanser are ideal night-time cleansers to fight inflammation, redness, and irritation.

Face Mask

facial maskAlthough face masks aren't necessary if you have an effective, consistent skin care routine, facial masks can help open up your pores to ensure your eye cream, moisturizer, and retinol are fully absorbed by the skin. One of the best face masks on the market is the dermatologist recommended Revision Skincare Black Mask. The Black Mask is made from silt from European freshwater lakes to help open your pores and soothe uneven skin.

Retinol Serum

After you've cleansed your skin and used your facial mask, apply a small amount of retinol serum on your entire face. Retinols are key to fighting signs of aging including wrinkles, fine lines, pigmentation irregularities, and improving skin texture. Be careful with the type of retinol serum you use as they can be very strong and easily dry out your skin. If there is one item in your skin care product line that you splurge on, let it be the retinol as it is a powerful factor in regaining brighter, younger-looking skin. NEOCUTIS Retinol, SENTÉ Intensive Bio Complete Cream, and SkinMedica Retinol Complex are three of the best dermatologist-recommended retinol serums.

Moisturizer

EltaMD Night MoisturizerMoisturizers are important for skin care whether targeted for aging skin or not. Throughout the day, your skin loses a lot of its moisture, so it's important to hydrate it. Although moisturizers like EltaMD AM Therapy are great, they are not the best moisturizer to use at night. Morning moisturizers are often lighter and contain sunscreen for all-day protection, but these characteristics aren't needed at night. In fact, a lighter moisturizer might not give the results you need, especially when you could be using a higher-grade moisturizer for your nighttime routine. EltaMD PM Therapy is one of the best night moisturizers available for aging skin thanks to its clinically proven formula that includes thioctic acid, linoleic acid, and vitamin E. The best part about night time moisturizers is that you can lather it on in a thick layer to let it do the work for you overnight. Don't forget to apply it to your neck and chin as well.

Eye Serum or Eye Cream

The most stubborn skin is always around the eyes, so after you apply your moisturizer, give your eyes a little extra love. The skin around your eyes is extremely delicate, so ensuring it is hydrated and protected is important. Obagi Eye Serum, SkinMedica Uplifting Eye Serum, and EltaMD Renew Eye Gel all contain ingredients that reduce puffiness, increases moisture levels, keep skin from drying out, and prevent wrinkles. Make sure the eye cream you use does not clog pores as that can be counterproductive.

Sleep

All of the retinol serums, night moisturizers, cleansers, and eye creams in the world can't compete with the natural benefits of sleeping. It is important to get a good night's sleep every night because, without sleep, your skin care products can only go so far.

I agree on all points…love SkinMedica retinol… need to find a good night time moisturizer… as well as a good vitamin C serum. A good daytime moisturizer as well… I have spent a fortune trying to keep my skin the best it can be for my age…without spending an exorbitant amount each month… any suggestions? I am 71 and have always been vigilant in caring for my skin and health…would love an unbiased opinion as to what products are the most successful as well as within reason pricewise. I ordered the SkinMedica retinol from you and was very pleased with the pricing!
